Title: By Your Side

Author: Kasie West

Genre & Age Group: Contemporary, romance, young adult

Goodreads Synopsis:

In this irresistible story, Kasie West explores the timeless question of what to do when you fall for the person you least expect. Witty and romantic, this paperback original from a fan favorite is perfect for fans of Stephanie Perkins and Morgan Matson.

When Autumn Collins finds herself accidentally locked in the library for an entire weekend, she doesn’t think things could get any worse. But that’s before she realizes that Dax Miller is locked in with her. Autumn doesn’t know much about Dax except that he’s trouble. Between the rumors about the fight he was in (and that brief stint in juvie that followed it) and his reputation as a loner, he’s not exactly the ideal person to be stuck with. Still, she just keeps reminding herself that it is only a matter of time before Jeff, her almost-boyfriend, realizes he left her in the library and comes to rescue her.

Only he doesn’t come. No one does.

Instead it becomes clear that Autumn is going to have to spend the next couple of days living off vending-machine food and making conversation with a boy who clearly wants nothing to do with her. Except there is more to Dax than meets the eye. As he and Autumn first grudgingly, and then not so grudgingly, open up to each other, Autumn is struck by their surprising connection. But can their feelings for each other survive once the weekend is over and Autumn’s old life, and old love interest, threaten to pull her from Dax’s side?

How I Found Out About It: Blogging

I have really enjoyed all of Kasie West’s novels that I’ve read so far. They all make for super fun, fluffy reads that are absolutely perfect for making anyone’s day. So, when I heard about the release of By Your Side and how it features a couple trapped in a library, I made sure to get my hands on it as quickly as possible.

This book was no exception- I definitely enjoyed it and its fluffiness as well. But I do have to say that this wasn’t my favourite Kasie West book, as there were still some flaws that I just couldn’t ignore.

For a quick summary, By Your Side revolves around a girl named Autumn. After her boyfriend gets into an accident after a party, she finds herself locked inside her local library with another guy from her school with a bad reputation, named Dax. When her boyfriend doesn’t come, she reverts her eyes over to Dax, and discovers that they have a significant bond. But once they do get released, which guy will Autumn turn to?

First things first, the characters. I enjoyed reading about the relatable character of Autumn, but I do have to tell you that I thought that the portrayal of anxiety in her wasn’t the most realistic. Honestly, it wasn’t explored enough. If she had severe severe anxiety, then I would’ve seen her completely panicking inside the library, but for the most part, I found that she remained calm. If she did have any major panic attacks, then they were definitely not up to par with what they were supposed to be.

In this book, yes, there was a love triangle, but it was much more tolerable than most. The two guys barely crossed each other’s ways throughout the duration of the story, as Autumn was stuck in the library with Dax and Jeff was in a coma at the hospital. Because of this, there obviously wasn’t much depth to the character of Jeff, but Dax was a mysterious guy with many interesting quirks. It took me a little while to warm up to him, but once I did, I went all in!

Now as for the plot, the synopsis is a tad misleading in saying that they are stuck in the library for the whole weekend- it’s really for about only one third of the book. I know, I was super confused when they were let out so early, and I thought it was just a dream! There also weren’t very many interesting events, so if you decide to pick this one up, then be prepared for that.

All in all, I did enjoy By Your Side a lot- for the most part, I am honestly just nit-picking. But still, it was a great, fun read full of adorable romance and captivating characters, and I’d definitely recommend it to any and all YA romance fans!💗

I’ve been thinking about reading this book for a while, what makes me most intrigued to read it is the mixed reviews that I have seen. I loved how nit picky your review is!
